8 GB for Kontakt2 VSL, even if the printed list of instruments and articulations is almost identical.Īnd there has to be a reason why Special Edition is 36 GB vs.

My thought on it was that it's a good price at $300 and may fill in some gaps due to its innovative workflow and sample switching and its breadth of articulations, and that software updates to that program might put it into the Big League.īut after re-reading Keyboard magazine's earlier mini-review from the orchestral library line-up of late last year, their caveats don't seem addressable without replacing the samle set or augmenting it (only two layers for most voices, and no woodwind sections in the library).Īt any rate, though it's tempting, and though it seems silly to spend $400 to barely upgrade my Kontakt2 VSL collection just to be eligible for the $600 extended version of Vienna Instruments Special Edition, I am biasing more and more towards the Vienna stuff the more that I track legacy projects with my Kontakt2 subset and compare to Westgate, Project SAM, etc.Īnd there has to be a reason why Special Edition is 36 GB vs. UB may not be ready yet either for those who have Intel Macs. I notice they seem to require a G5 and I have a G4. Thanks for the heads up on problems with Halion Player on the Mac. At any rate, I am sure it will probably be even more expensive than Vienna Cube. part-by-part tracking in a software DAW for recording purposes. I think the 5 computer setup is for live playing of a sixty-member virtual orchestra, vs. I assume it will cost upwards of $20,000 though, as it is ten volumes (apparently not available separately) and is all recorded at 192 kHz: The combined $1000 set is 80 GB, which is about ten times as much as you get with any of the similarly-priced dedicated collections for strings, brass, woodwinds, or percussion.Ī relatively new player has come along, Audio Impressions Realtime Instruments, and they cover everything from orchestral to world to ancient/baroque/etc. Yet the Kontakt2 library is 8 GB and Special Edition is around 36 GB. instead of going for the twofer of Special Edition and its expansion.

In fact, I may stick just with that for now, and augment with full libraries for Woodwinds/etc.

It is worth noting that the subset of Vienna that comes for free with Kontakt 2 is only slightly smaller (in terms of instruments covered, and available articulations) than the Vienna Special Edition. I can't live with discontinuity, and am quite happy with its "old vinyl" timbre (which the Hollywood crowd would not like anymore).

This is mostly because of the legato, which covers the most common playing style. I may still get a copy, but am fairly convinced after more demos and re-trackings (with available "freebie" teaser subsets from different vendors) that I'm going to go (at least initially) with an all-VSL solution. EM did a review in the new issue and gave it a 3 out of 5 for quality and a 5 out of 5 for value. It has a usable timbre and phrasing for classical work, but also has a bit of that Hollywood sound, and its timbre is easily manipulated in the GUI. That said, it is way better for most purposes than the budget libraries like MOTU's, Garritan's, Miroslav's, etc. It is by far the best bang for buck of any current string library.

To JG, I recommend the HALion Symphonic library - especially if you can find a way to qualify for the cross-grade at only $300.
